Burrows brought to his task knowledge gained during a distinguished career as a professor of Near Eastern languages and literatures, and through an intimate association with the Dead Sea Scrolls from the time they came to light. His book is intended primarily for the interested lay reader whose imagination has been fired by these great finds, but those with some background in Biblical history will find it informative as well. In The Dead Sea Scrolls he tells the entire story of the discoveries, of the attempts to date the manuscripts, of their content and their significance. Millar Burrows played a leading role in the first efforts to establish the authenticity and meaning of these documents. Soon recognized as "the greatest manuscript discovery of modern times," the chance finding of the Dead Sea Scrolls touched off furious controversy among Bible scholars and fascinated the public.
